How I Unexpectedly Landed an IndiaTV Internship and Learned a Hard Career Lesson

How I Unexpectedly Landed an IndiaTV Internship and Learned a Lesson Every Fresher Should Know

Disclaimer: This article reflects my personal experience and lessons learned during a short internship journey. The purpose of sharing this story is educational and reflective, not to criticize any individual or organization.

As an MCA graduate, I had almost convinced myself that I would never see myself working in a prestigious corporate environment.

The Indian job market feels difficult right now. Whether it's because of unemployment, the AI era, too much competition, changing industries, or simply a lack of opportunities, many fresh graduates have started doubting themselves—including me.

That's why getting selected for an internship at IndiaTV's Digital Solutions team felt completely unexpected.

Even though it was unpaid, I was excited.

## The First Few Days

Initially, the work felt strange.

Sometimes I found myself simply sitting in front of a screen, monitoring whether live feeds and streams were working properly. At times, I even wondered if I should quit because it felt like I was doing nothing.

But then the learning started.

I began hearing terms that were completely new to me:

  •  HLS
  •  VAST
  •  SCTE
  •  MPEG-DASH
  •  SRT
  •  CDN
  •  OTT workflows

As someone who loves technology and enjoys learning different things, I found these concepts fascinating. I had spent years learning web development, design, and other technical skills, but I had never explored how streaming platforms actually work behind the scenes.

Suddenly, an entirely new world of technology opened in front of me. I realized that every play button on an OTT app hides an entire ecosystem of streaming protocols, advertisements, monitoring systems, and cloud infrastructure

## Self-Doubt Never Really Goes Away

One of my seniors asked if I was comfortable working with websites.

Ironically, website development is one of my strongest areas, yet I still doubted myself.

I wondered:

"What if they expect me to write everything from memory?"

"What if I'm not as good as I think I am?"

I learned something important that day:

Even when you're skilled, self-doubt can still follow you.

## The Unexpected Incident

During one of the slower periods, I started doodling with a pencil.

I enjoy art and design, and I thought it would be fun if my teammates saw that I also had an artistic side.

I never imagined that a harmless drawing could be interpreted differently.

Unfortunately, the situation created an awkward misunderstanding.

I realized that in professional environments, intentions and perceptions can sometimes be completely different things.

That small moment eventually brought my internship journey to an unexpected end. It taught me that in professional environments, intentions and perceptions can sometimes be completely different things.

## What I Learned

Although my internship was short, it taught me lessons that I will probably remember throughout my career.

1. Never Stop Learning

I discovered an entirely new domain—OTT and streaming technologies—that I had never explored before.

2. Professional Environments Are Different

Small jokes, comments, or actions may not always be interpreted the way you intend.

3. Observe Workplace Culture First

Every workplace has its own culture and expectations. Understanding that culture is an important skill.

4. Self-Doubt Is Normal

You can know a lot and still feel uncertain. That doesn't mean you're incapable.

5. Multi-Specialization Isn't Always a Weakness

People often say that learning too many things is a mistake.

I disagree.

You never know which skill will open an unexpected door in your life.

For me, one opportunity introduced me to media technology, streaming systems, and an entirely new industry that I never thought I would experience.

## Final Thoughts

Did my internship end the way I expected?

No.

Do I regret learning from it?

Absolutely not.

I gained technical knowledge, real-world experience, and an important lesson about professionalism.

Sometimes your shortest experiences become your biggest teachers.

And sometimes, opportunities don't come into your life to stay forever.

They come to teach you something before sending you in a completely different direction.
